Colorized photo of the Hanna Ore Plant on the Erie Bayfront (c. 1900). The ship is the “City of Glasgow” one of the largest wooden bulk carriers on the Great Lakes, built by James Davidson in 1891. It was 291’ in length, with a 41’ beam & a draft of 20’. The City of Glasgow was the 2nd of Davidson’s “Big 4” ships & changed hands multiple times. The Buckeye Steamship Co (owner at the time of the photo photo) acquired the vessel on Oct. 11 1895. She was plagued by bad luck as she operated throughout the Great Lakes until 1907 when she ran aground & burned near Green Bay, WI. She was raised & returned to service as a stone barge, a refit that took 1+ year to complete. Seemingly destined for failure, in 1917 she ran aground in Lilly Bay & despite numerous efforts to free her, was officially abandoned in 1922.
